  1. What gender is more often affected by colorblindness?
    Answer: Men

  2. What famous author of two epic poems was blind?
    Answer: The Greek poet Homer, author of the Iliad and the Odyssey

  3. What animal has the largest eyeballs?
    Answer: The giant squid, whose eyeballs can be up to 10” in diameter. The land animal with the largest eyeballs is the ostrich, whose eyeballs are about 2” in diameter.

  4. What do The Brady Bunch’s Jan and Happy Days’ Fonzie have in common?
    Answer: Both needed glasses.

  5. What is one of only two parts of the body that doesn’t require blood vessels?
    Answer: The cornea of the eye, which can absorb oxygen from the outside air.

  6. What are optometrists looking for when they dilate eyes during an exam?
    Answer: Dilating drops allow the optometrists to use the instruments necessary to evaluate the back of the eye, including the retina and optic nerve.

  7. Who invented eyeglasses as a way to correct vision?
    Answer: Who knows!? The oldest known lens was found in ruins from the ancient city of Nineveh. After that there’s much debate about who “invented” eyeglasses (or spectacles). However, American scientist, author, and patriot Benjamin Franklin is credited with inventing bifocals, eyeglasses that correct for nearsightedness and farsightedness.

  8. Who invented sunglasses?
    Answer: This is an easier question to answer. Sunglasses were invented in 1929 by Sam Foster, and designed to protect eyes from the sun’s glare!

  9. What month is National Save Your Vision Month?
    Answer: March

  10. Do nearsighted people see better or worse when they are underwater?
    Answer: They see better! The water slows the speed of light and bends it more in water than in air. The effect is that nearsighted persons wearing goggles underwater can see more clearly than in air.
