That’s Not Glaucoma! Tales from the Referral Center
Presenter: Greg Schultz, OD (COPE# 28647GL)
This course will review cases referred for secondary/tertiary care to a referral center as suspected glaucoma. In these cases patients had suspicious discs, field loss, family history or borderline pressure but a final diagnosis that was something other than glaucoma. The key characteristics of glaucomatous optic atrophy are reviewed. Attendees will learn how to differentiate compressive optic neuropathy, ischemic optic neuropathy, optic disc drusen and anomalous discs with field loss from glaucoma.

The Effective Use of Oral Pharmaceuticals in Primary Eye Care

This course reviews the relevant terminology needed to fully understand the utilization of oral anti-infectives. Oral agents are discussed in detail as they pertain to use in eye care. Indications, contraindications side effects and recommended dosages are discussed. Oral Analgesics, Anti-infective (Bacterial and Viral), Antifungal medications, Glaucoma agents (CAI’s, Hyperosmotics) Anti-inflammatory and Immunosuppressive agents (steroids), Anti-allergy agents, Anti-fibrolytic agents are all discussed.

Americas Alarming Health and Metabolic Issues – Today and in the Future
Presenter: Nick Holdeman, OD, MD (COPE#34526-SD)
This lecture profiles the devastating and widespread impact of obesity in the United States. The discussion includes how to determine a healthy weight, ways to arrive at the proper caloric intake, and how to calculate a body mass index. Specific diet and exercise recommendations are presented, along with the evolution of obesity therapies (medical and surgical options) available for patients with morbid obesity. The course includes the pertinent clinical concepts regarding the metabolic syndrome and the frequent outcome of sedentary lifestyles, which is systemic hypertension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes mellitus. The current criteria for the classification and the diagnosis of diabetes will be reviewed. The material also covers the systemic & ocular complications, the monitoring techniques, and the various treatment modalities available for type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Cancer of the Eyes & Visual Systems

Provide an overview of the terminology necessary to manage patients with neo-plastic disease. Discuss primary eye cancers. Analyze metastatic disease to the eye and brain. Discuss the newest treatments out there.

Grand Rounds in Co-Management
Presenters: Missouri Eye Institute Doctors
The surgeons at Missouri Eye Institute will be presenting 2 hours of Co-Management Grand Rounds. Drs. Chuck Jansen, Dan Osborn, Larry Meyer, Ernie Bhend as well as our newest addition, our retinal specialist, Dr. Bob Benedett will be presenting interesting cases where proper co-management was crucial. The cases will include cornea, glaucoma, cataract, retina, oculo-plastics, and neuro-ophthalmology. Attendees will be learn the particulars of each case then using a question and answer format they will participate in a discussion with the presenting surgeons on how these patients could be best co-managed. The attendees will learn what is most important to evaluate post-operatively as well as how to explain post-operative symptoms and signs to the patients. Additionally, attendees will learn what not to say to patients which could lead to misunderstandings between the patient, operating surgeon, and co-managing optometrists if the patient needs to return to the operating surgeon for evaluation post-operatively.

Every staff member has questions about various mysterious aspects of optometry, but is often afraid to ask for fear of ridicule or feeling inadequate. Questions will be posed anonymously and answers will be provided as best as possible in a non-confrontational or judgmental manner.

The Role of Medical Records in Eyecare

Dr. Brownlow will present information on proper medical record keeping in eye care offices, including the logic for keeping good records, and the importance of complying with national rules and insurance company requirements for medical records and coding. The course will include case examples, where attendees will consider the content of medical records and the process of choosing codes to represent the office visit and additional procedures.

Diabetes

This interactive course will provide an outline of the questions asked specifically of the diabetic patient and what information the doctor is looking for to provide better care. Specialized testing will be discussed including: glucose testing, A1c testing, fundus photos, and OCT.
