Society Reports: Summer 2012

Central Missouri Optometric Society (COS)
Trustee: Jeffrey Gamble, OD

Central Optometric Society met at the office of Dr. Tim McGarity in Columbia, MO for our May meeting. Dr. McGarity is establishing himself as a private practitioner specializing in refractive surgery and complicated cataract surgery, including toric and multifocal IOLs. The evening was sponsored by Greg Raeman of Allergan. Greg also gave a very informative presentation on protecting your brand on the internet.

Art Epstein is the expected presenter at our June meeting, and Genentech will be sponsoring our July meeting. COS meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month and rotates between various restaurants in the mid-Missouri area.

Greater Ozark Optometric Society (GOOS)
Trustee: Katie McElvaine, OD

Our most recent meeting was May 15th at 6:30pm at Metropolitan Grille in Springfield. It was a regular business meeting with a guest speaker from Zioptan. During the summer months we will take our annual break and then return for an August Election Meeting on the 21st that will be sponsored by Alcon.

The Greater Ozark Optometric Society has a new website. The address is GreaterOzarksOptometric.org. All MOA members and especially GOOS members are invited to check the website out.

Kansas City Optometric Society (KCOS)
Trustee: Melanie Linderer, O

On June 4, KCOS had our legislative BBQ. We had 8 legislators attend. Our next meeting will be in September.

Northeast Optometric Society (NEOS)
Trustee: Mindy Blackford, OD

The NEOS met on June 20 at the Pear Tree Inn. The meeting was sponsored by Genzyme. A presentation was given on Fabry Disease.

Our next meeting will be in the fall.

Northwest Optometric Society (NWOS)
Trustee: Stephanie Erker, OD

We are all still recovering from the loss of our Children’s Vision Bill. With fresh senators and representatives entering the Senate and House, we should start forming new connections.

Please be on the lookout for an email inviting you for a Fall and Winter 2012 society meeting. If you have any questions, please contact me.

Enjoy your summer!

St. Louis Optometric Society (SLOS)
Trustees: Thomas Cullinane, OD & Robert Goerss, OD

SLOS held its monthly meetings on the Second Tuesday of the month. We had excellent attendance over the last few months. Speakers included Dr. Dwight Ackerman, Dr. Blair Lonsberry, Dr. Art Epstein, and Dr. John Crane with fourth-year UMSL students Eric Jerde and Suzanne Lackey.

We will be having our annual installation banquet in the living world facility at the St. Louis Zoo on Tuesday June 12th. Our new president will be Dr. Paul Whitten.

Our new SLOS web site is online at www.stlouisoptometricsociety.org. We are still working on our web site. We did decide to use the same web designer of the MOA, Lohman Hills Creative.

We have been promoting Dr. Terry Swinger’s Senate race heavily over the last year. We are asking every OD in our society to give and will continue throughout the campaign until November

Southeast Optometric Society (SEOS)
Trustee: Dan Obermark, OD

Our MOA President Dr. Jeff Weaver and our Executive Director Dr. LeeAnn Barrett provided a good exchange for us in March for our society presidential visit meeting.

The May meeting, sponsored by Alcon included dinner and Dr. Sean Mulqueeny, from St. Louis, who presented a program discussing “The Presbyopic Experience.”

Our next meeting will be on July 18, 2012 at the Hickory Log Restaurant, in Dexter, Missouri. One of the important items during this meeting will be the election of society officers. The Southeast Optometric Society continues to support Dr. Terry Swinger in his campaign for the Missouri State Senate.

Southwest Optometric Society (SWOS)
Trustee: Justin Stilley, OD

On April 17th the Southwest Optometric Society met at Mythos Greek restaurant in Joplin, Missouri. The meeting was sponsored by Shane Helmig of Ista Pharmaceuticals and Dr. Chad Betts presented on the topic of ocular allergy.

West Central Optometric Society (WCOS)
Trustee: Jason Lake, OD

The WCOS enjoyed their society day at the state capital in February. We shared our day with the NEOS and made contact with many different members of our state leadership.

We are in the process of planning an August meeting to welcome our esteemed president to the WCOS and officer elections.
